Zelkova serrata

Features and care

Zelkova serrata, known as the Japanese zelkova, is a deciduous tree with an ascending crown that opens into a vase shape. Its form, shade and autumn colours make it suitable for parks, large gardens and urban tree planting with enough space for its branches to develop.

The leaves are oblong or elliptical, green and with a markedly toothed margin. In autumn they can take on yellow, orange or reddish-brown tones, depending on growing conditions. The spring flowers are small, greenish and barely visible; they are followed by tiny, wingless fruits of little ornamental importance.

Its moderate growth allows it to reach a height of 15–25 m. It needs a sunny position and cool to moist, well-drained ground, with high watering that keeps moisture even in the warm months. It tolerates high humidity and withstands frosts within USDA 5–8. Soil aeration and a regular water supply during establishment favour a balanced crown.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
