Features and care
Actinidia chinensis, commonly known as Chinese kiwi or yellow kiwi, is a fast-growing, vigorous, deciduous fruit-bearing vine. It develops woody, twining stems with large, rounded, deep green leaves, capable of covering pergolas, trellises, walls, and other sturdy structures. It can reach 5 to 9 meters in height with support, so it needs ample space and a solid structure to guide its branches and support the weight of the foliage and fruit.
During spring, it produces white or cream-colored, slightly fragrant flowers, which give rise to yellow-fleshed fruit in properly pollinated female plants. The species is dioecious: male plants produce pollen but do not bear fruit, while female plants are the ones that bear fruit; therefore, it is necessary to include a compatible male pollinator that flowers at the same time, except in self-fertile varieties. Summer and winter pruning is important to control vigor, renew productive branches, and promote a quality harvest.
