Crataegus azarolus

Features and care

The Crataegus azarolus, known as azarole or Mediterranean rowan, is a small, deciduous tree or shrub with a rounded shape and medium growth rate. It can reach between 4 and 8 meters in height, forming a broad, branching crown, making it suitable for orchards, Mediterranean gardens, naturalized plantings, and as a specimen tree. Its leaves are green, lobed, and toothed, and in some varieties, it may have thorny branches, which should be taken into account when planting it near walkways.

In late spring or early summer, it produces dense clusters of white flowers with purple anthers, followed by rounded fruits resembling small apples. These ripen between late summer and autumn in shades of yellow, orange, or reddish, depending on the variety and growing conditions. The fruits are edible and can be eaten fresh when fully ripe or used in preserves, compotes, and jams; a warm, sunny location promotes greater sweetness and a better harvest.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
