Ziziphus jujuba

Features and care

Ziziphus jujuba, commonly known as jujube, is a small, deciduous fruit tree with an irregular shape and medium growth rate. It can reach between 5 and 10 meters in height, forming an open crown of somewhat zigzagging branches, which in some specimens may have thorns. Its leaves are small, glossy, and oval, with a deep green color, turning yellow before falling in autumn. It is a species very well-suited to orchards and gardens in warm, dry, or Mediterranean climates, where it combines great hardiness with fruit production.

During spring and summer, it produces small, fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers clustered in the leaf axils. Later, it develops jujubes, oval fruits that change from bright green to reddish-brown and finally to darker, wrinkled tones as they ripen. The flesh is crisp and sweet when eaten fresh, and more concentrated when the fruit is dried. Many varieties are self-fertile, although the presence of another compatible plant can improve fruit set and yield.

At Ornacom we cultivate each specimen directly, guaranteeing a balanced size and abundant flowering from the first years of planting.
