The Paulownia tomentosa, popularly known as the Paulownia or Empress tree, is a deciduous tree native to China. It is characterized by its very rapid growth, large heart-shaped leaves, and striking panicles of fragrant, bell-shaped lilac flowers that appear in early spring before the foliage emerges.

Its exceptionally fast development and lush habit make it a highly valued option for generating shade quickly, as well as for timber or biomass plantations.

It tolerates moderate drought well once established and adapts to poor soils, provided there is good drainage.
